Professional and academic trajectory

Dr. Moya-Angeler obtained his medical degree at Navarra University medical school. He performed his residency in Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology (via MIR) at FREMAP Hospital in Madrid.

Posteriorly he obtained a PhD with a European mention, graded as Cum Laude by unanimity, at Madrid Complutense University. After his training in Madrid, Joaquin performed three consecutive years of accredited training, by the USA accreditation council of graduate medical education (ACGME), at the United States of America: fellowship in metabolic bone diseases at Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) (ranked best hospital in orthopedics and traumatology by the U. S News & World Reports during nine consecutive years) in New York City, fellowship in Joint replacement (hip and knee joint replacement/arthroplasty) at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, and a fellowship in Sports Medicine at Penn State Hershey Medical Centre in State College, Pennsylvania.

More recently, Joaquin, passed the EBOT (European board of orthopedics and traumatology) exam, and is therefore and accredited board-certified surgeon in his specialty.

Dr. Moya-Angeler currently combines his academic position, as an attending surgeon at Arrixaca university hospital in Murcia, with his private practice in Murcia and Madrid. Joaquin nowadays also leads the medical services of the UCAM Murcia football club and closely collaborates with Soriano Trainers in the prevention and treatment of sports and musculoskeletal injuries.

Scientific trajectory

In the scientific field, Joaquin has participated as a speaker in national and international orthopedic meetings, including those of major relevance leaded by the Spanish, European and American societies: SECOT (Sociedad Española de Cirugía Ortopédica y Traumatología), EFORT (European Federation of National Associations of Orthopedics and Traumatology) y AAOS (American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery) respectively. Likewise, Dr. Moya-Angeler has actively collaborated for the past five years with the SECOT congress scientific committee and moderated a table, about anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), at the 51st congress edition. During his last two years of training in Madrid, Joaquin actively participated as a member of the SECOT board of directors committee and was responsible for the development and coordination of all the academic activities for residents at a national level.

During his first year of post- residency training in the US (fellowship), at Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, Joaquin participated as a senior clinical associate in orthopedic surgery at Weill Cornell University Medical College. That same year, Joaquin collaborated as an author of the orthopedic knowledge update book (12th edition), which is, the U.S reference text book in orthopedics and traumatology and was published by the American academy of orthopedics and traumatology (AAOS) in 2017. During his second year of training in New York, Joaquin was awarded with the best fellow research project award among all the orthopedic fellows at Lenox Hill Hospital with the paper: “Isolated polyethylene exchange with increased constraint is comparable to component revision TKA for instability”. The same project was also awarded with the “Clinical Science Research Award 2016” granted by the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research in New York.

Joaquin is currently a member of multiple orthopedic associations (SECOT, AAOS, AMA, AAHSKS, AAOSM), serves as a scientific reviewer and critiques articles for the US journal of arthroplasty (one of the reference journals worldwide about hip and knee replacement surgery) and is a member of the SLAOT (Sociedad Latino Americana de Ortopedia y Traumatología) journal editorial committee.
